Situated on a small kiwifruit orchard owned by a kiwi couple in Te Puke, the owners have a small flat which they intended to refurbish for leasing purposes. With a tight budget and time constraints, we set our objective to refurbish the interior into a contemporary looking and easy to maintain space. We reorganized the spatial arrangement to make the space more efficient, dividing one large bedroom into two smaller yet still functional bedrooms.  A partition was extended in the living area to create a more defined space between the living area and kitchen as well as creating a storage space to house the refrigerator.

As the built-up area of the flat is quite small, we kept all architectural elements streamlined. To deemphasize the lackluster architecture the walls, partitions, cabinets and trims were all painted the same white hue. This approach resulted in creating a blank canvas effect allowing our eyes to gravitate to the richer textiles and hues found in the furniture, accessories, and finishes, as well as creating a more spacious and airy feeling. A dark grey paint was applied to the extended partition (separating bathroom and living area) creating a feature wall which gave the space a contemporary feel and emphasizing the length of the living space and making the space feel larger than it is. All light fittings were also replaced with cool white LED fittings making the interior look more spacious. A contemporary pendant light fitting was introduced in the living area as a centerpiece further enhancing the contemporary feel.
